How deep can I drill into a country?

The current snapshot has state/province (ADM1) boundaries for 236 countries and territories. About 51 larger or well-mapped countries — including Turkey, the US, Germany, France, and most of the EU — go one level further to districts (ADM2), such as Turkey's 81 provinces and their ilçe. A few very small or disputed areas have only their country outline. At every focused level, available settlement points are scoped to the selected boundary.

Why don't I see village or neighborhood boundaries?

Village- and neighborhood-level (köy/mahalle) polygon boundaries are not part of any complete, open, redistributable global dataset — geoBoundaries' gbOpen release stops at ADM2 for most countries and ADM3/ADM4 for only a handful. Rather than fake a boundary that doesn't exist in the source data, the map shows the roughly 7,333 named points available in Natural Earth's populated-places dataset. These are mapped settlements, not a complete list of every city or village.

What is the choropleth panel and how do I use it?

It's a paste-your-own-data coloring tool. Paste CSV rows like "TUR,85000000" or a JSON array/object with the same shape, and the panel matches each row against the regions currently on screen by id, ISO code, or name, then colors them on a 5-stop scale with a legend showing the value range. It only affects the layer you're currently looking at — drill in or back out and it recomputes against the new set of regions.

Some of my choropleth rows didn't match — why?

Matching is case-insensitive against each visible region's id, ISO code, and name, but it can't guess intent — a misspelled name, a two-letter code where three letters are expected, or a code for a region that isn't currently on screen (e.g. a district code pasted while viewing the world view) won't match. The panel lists exactly how many rows matched, how many didn't, and which lines couldn't be parsed at all, so you can fix the data rather than guess.

How do I export the map?

The Export image menu above the map offers a PNG download, an SVG download, and a "copy PNG to clipboard" option — all captured from exactly what's rendered on screen, at 2x resolution for PNG. Separately, the panel beside the map offers GeoJSON: copy it or download it for whichever region is selected, or for the whole current layer if nothing is selected.

If I click into a district, can I get back to where I was?

Yes — the breadcrumb trail above the map shows every level from World down to your current region and jumps back to any of them on click, the Back button steps up exactly one level, and the browser's own Back/Forward buttons work the same way because the current region is kept in the page's URL.

Can I jump straight to a place instead of clicking through continents?

Yes — the search box above the map matches both countries and any region inside the currently loaded search index by name, so typing part of a country, state, or province name and selecting it jumps directly there without drilling down manually.

Where does the boundary data come from, and is my pasted data uploaded?

World and province-level boundaries and settlement points come from Natural Earth (public domain); deeper boundaries come from geoBoundaries' gbOpen release, with the actual country-specific upstream licenses recorded in the tool's attribution. Every boundary file is fetched as a static asset from the same origin as the page itself. Choropleth values are parsed and rendered locally in your browser and are not uploaded to a map or geocoding service.
